How much enamel for windows and trim?
How much enamel for windows, frames and skirting — liters from linear or square meters, coats and yield.
Quick answer
Window and skirting enamel is brushed in thin coats — coverage is higher than wall emulsion, often 11–12 m²/L per coat. We default to 11.5 m²/L with two coats on bare wood or stripped metal. Worked example: 12 windows + doors trim ≈ 35 m² paintable → 35×2÷11.5×1.1 ≈ **6.7 L** → **3× 2.5 L tins**.

High-gloss enamels for wood and metal trim cover roughly 11–12 m²/L per coat with a brush. Two coats on bare wood; one maintenance coat may suffice on sound old paint.
How it works
Mask glass and hardware; gloss shows every drip. Water-based trim enamels dry faster for DIY; alkyd still dominates for durability on exterior wood. Search window trim enamel paint in satin if you want less glare than full gloss.
Frequently asked questions
How to estimate m² for windows?+
Count frame faces you will paint — both sides of openable sashes double the area. Rule of thumb: one standard window (120×140 cm) ≈ 2–3 m² per side painted. Add skirting and door frames to the total area field.
One or two coats on old enamel?+
Sound, degreased old enamel: one scuff-sanded maintenance coat may suffice. Bare wood or colour change: two coats. Set coats to 1 in the calculator for refresh jobs.
Satin vs gloss on trim?+
Gloss is traditional and washable but shows imperfections. Satin hides brush marks better on interior trim; exterior wood often uses satin or semi-gloss for UV performance. Yield is similar.
Primer under window enamel?+
Bare wood: wood primer or first thinned coat of enamel. Bare metal: anti-rust primer. This calculator sizes enamel coats only — add primer liters separately if you stripped to substrate.
