How much wood varnish do you need?
Liters of clear wood varnish or copal from area, coats and absorption factor.
Quick answer
Clear wood varnishes and copal finishes are thin films — coverage looks generous on paper (10–14 m²/L) but drops fast on open-grain oak, end grain and cut edges. Two coats are standard; floors and tabletops often need three for abrasion resistance.

- 3 × 2.5 L
Clear wood varnishes often cover 10ÔÇô14 m┬▓/L per coat on smooth timber. Sand between coats and dust off before the next pass.
How it works
Sand between coats with progressively finer grit and remove dust — trapped dust is the main reason people buy a third liter unexpectedly. Match the advanced yield to your product line (yacht varnish vs interior copal differ). For application tools see fine sandpaper and foam brushes.
Frequently asked questions
How many coats of varnish on furniture?+
Two coats minimum for cabinets and shelves; three for tables, stairs and anything that gets daily wear. Light sanding (220–320 grit) between coats — never skip on open-grain woods.
Varnish or oil for outdoor wood?+
Film-forming varnish gives harder protection but can peel if moisture moves in the wood; oils penetrate and are easier to refresh but need more frequent maintenance. This calculator sizes varnish liters — for decking oils use the impregnant preset instead.
Why is my calculated amount higher than the tin label?+
Labels assume smooth, flat panels. Raised panel doors, spindles and carved details multiply surface area. When in doubt, measure each face separately or add 15% waste in advanced settings.
Water-based or solvent varnish?+
Water-based dries faster, smells less and is fine indoors. Solvent/varnish copal builds a harder traditional film — better for some exterior joinery but needs ventilation. Coverage per liter is similar; recoat times differ.
