How it works
This preset defaults to one coat. If you are converting heavy rust, mechanical removal plus primer beats a second liter of paint on top of failing oxide. Search rust primer metal compatible with your topcoat chemistry (epoxy vs alkyd).
Tight rust that will not brush off may need rust converter first — it is not the same litre count as primer but changes how much oxide the build coat must bite through. Mask adjacent masonry with masking film before wire brushing; rust dust stains brick permanently.
Every primer has a window for the coat that goes over it, and missing it costs more than a litre. Too soon and you seal solvent under the topcoat; too late and the primer has cured hard, so the topcoat sits on it mechanically instead of bonding chemically — with epoxy primers that door often closes within a day or two, after which you have to abrade the whole surface before continuing. The window is on the technical sheet, not the label. Plan the topcoat before you open the primer, because the schedule is the part of the system that cannot be bought later.

One coat enough on new bare steel?+
