How much metal enamel paint do you need?
Liters of direct-to-metal enamel from surface area, coats and primer status.
Quick answer
Direct-to-metal enamels cover more area per liter than facade paint when the steel is smooth, primed and degreased — typically 10–12 m²/L per coat. Rust, mill scale and overspray on rough welds destroy that number fast.

Direct-to-metal enamels cover roughly 10ÔÇô12 m┬▓/L per coat on primed steel. Rust and grease must be removed first.
How it works
Two finish coats over primer is the usual system; this preset sizes enamel only. Use the metal-primer calculator for the build coat on bare steel. Prep beats math: wire brush, degrease, then metal enamel. Cold metal sweats — paint in dry weather above the minimum temperature on the can.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need primer before metal enamel?+
On bare steel or rust, yes — use anti-rust primer first (see our metal-primer tool). On factory-primed gates or galvanized parts, degrease and test adhesion; sometimes a compatible primer tie-coat is still required.
Spray can or brush for metal railings?+
Spray is faster on tubes and scrollwork but wastes 20–30% overspray outdoors — raise waste in advanced. Brushes and small rollers are economical on flat panels. Liter math is the same; consumption per m² differs.
How many coats on outdoor metal?+
Minimum: one primer + two enamel. Coastal or industrial pollution may need a third enamel coat or a higher-build system. UV fades color before the film fails — plan touch-ups, not lifetime single purchase.
Can I paint galvanized metal directly?+
Only with etch primer or paints labeled for galvanized steel. Standard enamel on fresh zinc peels within months. Add a primer coat to your shopping list even if this calculator only sized enamel.
