How much metal enamel paint do you need?

How it works
Two finish coats over primer is the usual system; this preset sizes enamel only. Use the metal-primer calculator for the build coat on bare steel. Prep beats math: wire brush, degrease, then metal enamel. Cold metal sweats — paint in dry weather above the minimum temperature on the can.
Mill scale and welding spatter cut coverage in half — a wire brush set plus metal degreaser spray before primer does more than an extra litre of topcoat. On gates and railings, a spray paint handle saves finger fatigue when you are holding a can at arm’s length for hours.
There is a number that decides the job before the litres do, and it is not on the tin: steel must be at least three degrees warmer than the dew point, or there is a film of moisture on it you cannot see. Enamel over that lifts within a season and looks like a product fault. In practice: do not paint metal early on a clear morning while it is still colder than the air, and stop in the late afternoon when it starts cooling again — even in fine weather that leaves a working window of a few hours, which is why steel jobs are planned around the middle of the day rather than around daylight.

Do I need primer before metal enamel?+
On bare steel or rust, yes — use anti-rust primer first (see our metal-primer tool). On factory-primed gates or galvanized parts, degrease and test adhesion; sometimes a compatible primer tie-coat is still required.
Spray can or brush for metal railings?+
Spray is faster on tubes and scrollwork but wastes 20–30% overspray outdoors — raise waste in advanced. Brushes and small rollers are economical on flat panels. Liter math is the same; consumption per m² differs.
How many coats on outdoor metal?+
Minimum: one primer + two enamel. Coastal or industrial pollution may need a third enamel coat or a higher-build system. UV fades color before the film fails — plan touch-ups, not lifetime single purchase.
Can I paint galvanized metal directly?+
Only with etch primer or paints labeled for galvanized steel. Standard enamel on fresh zinc peels within months. Add a primer coat to your shopping list even if this calculator only sized enamel.
