How much exterior wall paint do you need?

How much exterior wall paint for facades and render — liters, cans and waste allowance.

Quick answer

Facade paint covers far fewer square meters per liter than interior emulsion — rough render, micro-cracks and weathered surfaces eat product. Manufacturers often quote 4–6 m²/L per coat outdoors; we default to 5 m²/L with two coats on standard renovation jobs.

Facade paints yield less (often 4ÔÇô6 m┬▓/L per coat) because the surface is rougher and the film must withstand weather. Two coats are standard on bare render.

How it works

Exterior work also loses material to wind, ladder drip and masking. Use the absorbent or rough surface factor for chalky old paint or bare concrete block. Pair the result with exterior masonry paint rated for your climate (silicate vs acrylic) and check the recoat window on the tin before you order full quantity.

Frequently asked questions

How much facade paint for 100 m² of wall?+

At 5 m²/L and two coats on a normal render: 100 × 2 ÷ 5 = 40 liters before waste and surface factor. Add 10% waste → ~44 L. Very rough brick or porous block can push past 50 L.

Do I need primer on exterior walls?+

On bare render or after stripping failing paint, yes — primer stabilizes suction and improves adhesion. This calculator sizes finish coats; add primer separately (often similar liters to one full coat) or use the metal-primer tool if you are on galvanized elements.

Can I paint exterior walls in winter?+

Only inside the temperature and humidity window on the label — typically +5 to +25 °C and dry weather. Cold slows cure and can cause flaking; rain within 24 h of application is a common failure mode. Buy slightly extra so you are not reopening partial cans next season.

Roller or sprayer for facades?+

Large flat render: airless sprayer is fastest but needs skill and masking. Textured surfaces and DIY renovators usually roll — slower but less overspray waste. Spraying often needs +15% material in the waste field.
