- Lengthmm · cm · m · km · in · ft · yd · miAlmost the whole world measures length in metres. The exceptions are narrow but stubborn: the United States uses feet and inches for everyday distances, and the United Kingdom still posts road signs in miles while selling timber in millimetres.
- Temperature°C · °F · KTemperature is the one family here that is not a multiplication. Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points as well as different step sizes, so you need the formula: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32.
- Volumeml · l · m³ · gal · pt · fl oz · cupThis is the family where the same word means two different amounts. American and British measures share their names but not their sizes, and a recipe that ignores the difference will not work.
- Aream² · km² · ha · ft² · acAreas are where a linear conversion quietly goes wrong. One metre is 3.28 feet, but one square metre is 10.76 square feet — the factor is squared. Converting the sides and forgetting the square is the single most common mistake in this family.
- Speedkm/h · mph · m/s · knFour units, four different worlds. Kilometres per hour on European roads, miles per hour in the US and UK, metres per second in physics and weather bulletins, knots at sea and in the air.
- Times · min · h · d · wk · mo · yrSeconds, minutes, hours, days and weeks convert exactly. Months and years do not, and no converter can make them.
- Digital storagebit · B · KB · MB · GB · TBDigital storage has two conflicting definitions of the same prefixes, and almost every confusion about file sizes comes from that.

About weight / mass units
The kilogram is the base unit, and until 2019 it was the last one still defined by a physical object: a platinum-iridium cylinder kept near Paris. It is now defined through the Planck constant, so it can be reproduced in any properly equipped laboratory.
The pound has been defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg since 1959. Britain uses stone for body weight (1 st = 14 lb), which is why a UK bathroom scale may read "11 st 4" instead of 71.7 kg.
Strictly these are masses, not weights — weight is a force and changes with gravity. Everyday use has settled on the looser meaning, and so has this converter.
Divide the result and shipping stops being a guess. **A 48 kg order split over eight boxes is 6 kg each — and it is the 6 that decides what you pay, not the 48.** Couriers price in steps per parcel, so the same total costs very different amounts depending on how you break it up: eight boxes just under a band are cheaper than seven just over it. The field under the result gives you the per-parcel weight directly, which is the number the price list is indexed on.

Frequently asked questions
Is an ounce of gold the same as an ounce of flour?
No — and the difference is nearly 10%. The everyday avoirdupois ounce is 28.35 g. Precious metals are weighed in troy ounces of 31.103 g. A gold price "per ounce" always means troy.
Why does my parcel cost more than its weight suggests?
Couriers charge the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, calculated from the box dimensions. A large box of light goods is billed on its size, so converting the weight alone will not explain the price.
What does "11 stone 4" mean in kilograms?
A stone is 14 pounds, so 11 st 4 lb = 158 lb = 71.7 kg. The trailing number is pounds, not tenths of a stone — reading it as 11.4 stone is a common mistake.
Is a ton the same everywhere?
No. The metric tonne is 1,000 kg. The US short ton is 907 kg and the British long ton is 1,016 kg. This converter uses the metric tonne.
