About length units
Almost the whole world measures length in metres. The exceptions are narrow but stubborn: the United States uses feet and inches for everyday distances, and the United Kingdom still posts road signs in miles while selling timber in millimetres.
Some inches survive even in fully metric countries. Screen sizes, bike wheels, pipe threads and rim diameters are quoted in inches everywhere — those are industry conventions, not national ones.
Since 1959 the inch is defined as exactly 25.4 mm by international agreement. Conversions are therefore exact, not approximate: 1 ft = 0.3048 m to the last digit.

Frequently asked questions
Why is aircraft altitude always in feet?
Because aviation standardised on feet worldwide, including in metric countries. A "flight level 350" means 35,000 ft, roughly 10,668 m. Only a few airspaces (China, Russia, Mongolia) use metres.
Is a mile always 1,609 metres?
No, and this trips people up. The statute mile used on roads is 1,609.344 m. The nautical mile used at sea and in the air is 1,852 m — about 15% longer. If a figure comes from a boat, a plane or a weather bulletin, check which one it is.
How do I work with American plans and European materials?
Convert to millimetres, not to centimetres. Building and joinery drawings in Europe are dimensioned in millimetres precisely to avoid decimal points, and sheet goods come in mm thicknesses. A 3/4" board is 19.05 mm, which is why 18 mm plywood is the usual substitute.
