About volume units
This is the family where the same word means two different amounts. American and British measures share their names but not their sizes, and a recipe that ignores the difference will not work.
The US gallon is 3.785 L, the imperial gallon 4.546 L — a 20% gap. The US fluid ounce is 29.57 ml against the imperial 28.41 ml. A US pint is 16 fl oz; a British pint is 20, which is why a pint of beer in London is genuinely bigger.
Cups are worse: a US cup is 236.6 ml, a "metric cup" is 250 ml, and in the UK the cup was never standardised at all. This converter uses US measures, the ones most online recipes assume.

Frequently asked questions
How many ml is a cup of flour?
A US cup is 236.6 ml of volume whatever you put in it. But a cup of flour weighs about 120 g and a cup of sugar about 200 g — volume and weight only line up for water. If a recipe matters, weigh it.
Which gallon does a fuel figure use?
American sources mean the US gallon, British ones the imperial gallon. This is why the same car is rated at, say, 30 mpg in the US and 36 mpg in the UK without anything changing: the gallon is bigger.
Is a fluid ounce the same as an ounce?
No. A fluid ounce measures volume, an ounce measures weight. They coincide only for water, and even then only approximately. "8 oz of milk" in a recipe almost always means fluid ounces.
How do I convert a British recipe?
Check the source first. If it is British, reduce fluid ounces by about 4% relative to the US values shown here, and remember a British pint is 568 ml against 473 ml. Modern UK recipes usually give grams and millilitres anyway.
