About temperature units
Temperature is the one family here that is not a multiplication. Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points as well as different step sizes, so you need the formula: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32.
Fahrenheit set his zero at the freezing point of a brine solution, the coldest he could reliably reproduce in 1724. Celsius anchored to water: 0 for freezing, 100 for boiling. Kelvin starts at absolute zero and shares the Celsius step.
The two scales cross at exactly −40: minus forty degrees is the same reading on both.

Frequently asked questions
Do you write "degrees Kelvin"?
No. Kelvin has no degree sign: it is written 300 K, not 300 °K. It is an absolute scale, so there is no "degree above an arbitrary zero" to speak of.
What is a normal body temperature in Fahrenheit?
37 °C is 98.6 °F. That famous figure is simply a converted value, which is why it looks oddly precise — the original measurement was never that exact.
How do I convert oven temperatures?
The formula is the same, but recipes are forgiving: 180 °C = 356 °F is normally written as 350 °F, and 200 °C = 392 °F becomes 400 °F. British recipes may also use gas marks — gas 4 is about 180 °C.
Is there a quick mental trick?
Double the Celsius value and add 30. For 20 °C that gives 70 °F against a true 68 °F — close enough for weather, not for an oven or a fever.
