About area units
Areas are where a linear conversion quietly goes wrong. One metre is 3.28 feet, but one square metre is 10.76 square feet — the factor is squared. Converting the sides and forgetting the square is the single most common mistake in this family.
For land, Europe counts in hectares (10,000 m², a square 100 m on each side) and the English-speaking world in acres (4,046.86 m²). The acre began as the area one ox could plough in a day, which is why it is not a round number.
Property listings follow the country: square metres across most of Europe, square feet in the United States, the UK and much of Asia.
Splitting an area per room is worth more than it looks, because materials are bought by the pack and packs round up **per room, not per house**. **80 m² over six rooms is 13.3 m² each** — and six rooms of 13 m² can need more flooring than one open space of 80, because each room ends its last row with an offcut too short to start the next one. The same applies to paint: six small tins cover less than the litres suggest, since a share of every tin stays on the roller and in the tray.

Why is 1 m² not 3.28 ft²?
Because area scales with the square of the length. 1 m = 3.2808 ft, so 1 m² = 3.2808² = 10.764 ft². The same rule applies to volumes, where the factor is cubed.
How big is a hectare in practice?
A square 100 m on each side, or roughly one and a half football pitches. An acre is about 40% of a hectare — a bit over half a pitch.
Are apartment sizes measured the same way everywhere?
No, and the unit is the smaller problem. Countries differ on whether balconies, walls and shared spaces count. Convert the number, but check what it includes before comparing two listings.
How much paint or flooring do I need for a converted area?
Convert to square metres first, then use a coverage figure in m², because products sold in Europe state their yield that way. Converting the final quantity instead of the area is where rounding errors pile up.
