How big a turtle tank or pen — and how much sand?

Minimum water volume or pen area from shell size, plus sand/substrate kilograms for the dry area or outdoor run.

Quick answer

Aquatic turtles need swimming room first: a common hobby rule of thumb is about 10 liters of water per centimeter of shell length for a single slider-type turtle, with a dry basking platform. Land tortoises need floor area more than deep water — roughly a multiple of shell length for the short side of an outdoor pen. Sand or soil mix depth on the dry zone (or pen floor) turns into kilograms once you multiply area × depth × density.

Aquatic rule of thumb ~10 L water per cm of shell for one turtle, plus a dry basking dock. Land pens: short side at least ~4–5× shell length as a rough outdoor minimum. Sand kg ≈ area(m²) × depth(m) × 1.55. Plan for adult size, use UVB, avoid unsafe calcium sands. Not species-specific veterinary advice.

How it works

The calculator gives planning numbers for shopping UVB lamps, tanks and sand bags — not a species care sheet. Hatchlings grow fast; size for the adult you will have, filter heavily, and never use calcium sand that can cause impaction. Ask a reptile vet for your species.

Frequently asked questions

How many liters for a 15 cm aquatic turtle?+

Around 150 L of water as a starting point (10 L × 15 cm) for one animal, plus a dry basking dock. Many keepers go larger for better water quality. Two turtles need much more than double if they share.

How much sand do I need?+

Estimate dry-area (or pen) length × width × depth in meters, then × about 1.5–1.6 for damp sand kg/L. A 60×40 cm platform with 4 cm of sand is only a few kilograms; a full outdoor pen is bags.

Is sand safe for turtles?+

Play sand or reptile soil mixes are common on land areas; avoid dusty or clumping “calcium sand.” Aquatic tanks often use bare bottom or large gravel for easier cleaning — species matters.

Indoor tank or outdoor pen?+

Aquatic pets usually start indoors with heater and UVB. Hardy tortoises may live outdoors in a secure pen when climate allows. The calculator switches volume vs area by setup type.
