How much window mesh, door curtains or outdoor repellent you need for your area in m² — screens, citronella and coils.
Quick answer
Summer protection scales with area — not with guesswork. For window mesh, add 12% waste then divide by a 1.5 m roll width: 8 m² of glazing → 9 m² mesh → ~6 m of roll. For a 15 m² terrace dinner, plan 2 citronella candles (~12 m² each) plus 1 mosquito coil (~25 m² for 4–6 hours) — spaced around seating, not only at the table.

Before ordering the metres, decide what you are keeping out. Standard mosquito mesh has an opening of roughly 1.2 mm, which stops mosquitoes and lets sandflies and biting midges straight through — those need a much finer weave, sold specifically for the purpose. The trade-off is real and worth knowing in advance: the finer the mesh, the less air passes, and on a hot still night a very fine screen noticeably reduces the draught through the window. If midges are not your problem, the standard mesh is the more comfortable choice.

Measure total glazing area (e.g. 6 × 1.2 m² = 7.2 m²), enter it in m², select Window mesh. The tool adds waste and roll length. Cut oversized pieces and fix with hook tape — mesh must overlap the frame by 2–3 cm on each side.
Citronella candles or mosquito coils on the terrace?+
Use both for a 3–4 hour dinner: candles create a scent barrier at seating height; coils cover wider ground level. Keep coils on a metal holder, away from tablecloths. Neither replaces window screens if you sleep nearby with doors open.
What size magnetic door screen do I need?+
Measure door width × height in m² (standard door ≈ 0.9 × 2.1 m = 1.9 m²). Enter total m² for all openings — the calculator rounds up to panel count. Oversized curtains can be trimmed; undersized ones leave gaps mosquitoes exploit instantly.
Do plug-in repellents work for large terraces?+
Plug liquid vaporizers are for enclosed rooms (~20 m² each). Open terraces need outdoor products (citronella, coils, or propane traps). For bedrooms opening onto the garden, combine window mesh with an indoor diffuser at night.
