How many packs of laminate flooring do you need?
Number of laminate or vinyl packs to buy from room area, pack size and cutting waste.
Quick answer
Laminate and click vinyl are sold by the pack, and the m² on the label is never the m² of your room — cuts, doorways and the first and last row eat material. The only number that matters at checkout is packs = ceiling(room m² × (1 + waste) ÷ m² per pack).

Pack coverage is on the box — often 1.8–2.5 m². Add 10% for straight rooms, 12–15% for diagonal layouts or many corners. Leave expansion gap at walls (8–10 mm).

The number on the box is the pack coverage, not your room: at 2 m² per pack a 25 m² room needs 14 packs, not 13, once the 10% cutting waste is in. Two details decide whether that estimate holds. Diagonal or herringbone layouts push waste to 12–15% because every board meets the wall at an angle, and a room with many doorways or a chimney breast does the same. And packs from different batches can differ slightly in shade: buying the spare pack later, separately, is how a patched board ends up visibly lighter than the rest of the floor.
Always add 5–10% waste for cuts (default 10% here): the first and last rows are trimmed, doorways need notches, and planks rarely land on full lengths. Straight rectangle: 5–10% is enough. Diagonal layout, L-shaped halls or many door cuts: 12–15%. Skipping waste is the classic “one pack short” failure — buy the extra pack; leftovers store for repairs.
Underlay (tappetino fonoassorbente) is not in the box. Unroll it perpendicular to the plank direction, butt joints tight (no overlap unless the brand says so), tape seams, and leave the same expansion gap at walls as the flooring. On concrete, choose underlay with a vapour barrier (or a separate PE sheet) so moisture does not swell the core. Foam or cork underlay cuts footfall noise to the room below. Then click the first row with spacers. A laminate underlay roll plus installation kit with spacers prevent the classic first-row gap mistake.
Two rules decide whether a floor stays flat, and neither is in the pack count. The boxes have to sit flat in the room they will be laid in for about forty-eight hours first — a floor laid straight off a cold van moves once it reaches room conditions. And the perimeter gap of eight to ten millimetres is structural, not tidy: a floating floor laid tight to the walls has nowhere to go when it expands and lifts into a ridge somewhere in the middle. Which is also why the skirting is fixed to the wall and never through the floor: pin it down anywhere and you have removed the float.

At 2 m² per pack and 10% waste: 20 × 1.1 ÷ 2 = 11 packs. Always round up — an opened pack you do not use can usually be returned if sealed; a missing half-pack mid-job is worse.
Why add 5–10% waste for laminate?+
Cuts at walls, door notches and staggered end joints consume length that never appears on the pack label. 5% is the bare minimum on a simple rectangle; 10% is the safe default; diagonals and complex rooms need more.
How do I lay acoustic underlay under laminate?+
Unroll perpendicular to the planks, butt seams (tape them), keep the expansion gap at walls, and use vapour-barrier underlay on concrete. Do not stack two foam layers unless the manufacturer allows it — thickness can void the flooring warranty.
Do I need to acclimate laminate before installing?+
Yes — leave sealed packs flat in the room for 48 hours at normal living temperature. Skipping this causes expansion gaps or buckling after install.
