Is it cheaper to buy or rent a forklift?
Break-even days to buy vs rent a forklift — from daily hire rate, purchase price and how long you need it.
Quick answer
For a forklift, break-even days ≈ purchase ÷ daily rent. At about €22000 new and €120/day hire that is 183.3 days. A 3-day job costs ~€360 in hire — buy only if you will reuse, keep, or resell it.

How it works
On heavy forklifts, operator tickets, insurance and transport often dwarf the day rate — use the advanced fields. This page is planning math, not a substitute for a local yard quote.
Two things sit between the quote and actually using it. Operating a forklift at work requires documented training, and the hire company will ask for it — the machine is easy to move and the certification is what makes it legal. The second is the load chart on the mast: rated capacity applies at a stated load centre and at low height, and it falls sharply as the load moves forward on the forks or rises up the mast. A truck sold as two and a half tonnes may be well under that at four metres, which is exactly where people discover it.
Frequently asked questions
When does buying a forklift pay off vs renting?+
Break-even ≈ purchase ÷ daily rent: €22000 ÷ €120/day ≈ **183.3 days**. Fewer → rent; more → buy if you will reuse or resell (tweak resale % in advanced settings).
How much does a forklift hold its value?+
Handled through dealers and auctions, and priced on running hours rather than age. For occasional use the arithmetic almost never favours buying. Enter what you expect to recover in the advanced settings — it moves the break-even more than people think.
What is not included in the daily rate for a forklift?+
Delivery on a low-loader both ways, and a certified operator — the licence is a legal requirement, not a formality. Add fuel or charging, and check the mast height fits your doorway before it arrives. Deposit and late-return penalties apply on top, as everywhere.
Why is there no purchase link for this equipment?+
Forklifts are bought or leased through dealers and rental fleets — not typical Amazon checkout. Transport, operator tickets and insurance dominate the real cost. Use this page for break-even math; get quotes from local yards.
